Everything You Need to Know About In-Home Lifestyle Newborn Sessions

Writer: Jaclyn Kushner PhotographyJaclyn Kushner Photography

Bringing home your newborn is

one of the most exciting

and overwhelming experiences,

and those first few weeks

go by in a blur.

That’s where I come in

— to help you document

the beauty of this season

in the most natural,

stress-free way possible.

What is a Lifestyle Newborn Session?

A lifestyle newborn session

is all about capturing those sweet,

fleeting moments with your baby

in the comfort of your home.

No stiff posing,

no elaborate props

— just your family,

your love,

and the little details

that make this time so special.

My goal is to create timeless,

heartfelt images

that reflect your genuine connections.

Will There Be Posed Newborn Shots?

These sessions don’t include the traditional posed,

wrapped-in-a-basket shots.

Instead, I focus on natural moments

— snuggles on the couch,

soft kisses,

and the way your baby

fits perfectly in your arms.

While I do guide you into the best light

and provide direction,

the overall feel is relaxed and candid.

Do You Bring Any Props?

I bring a selection of neutral swaddles,

but the focus will always be on your family

and your baby’s natural beauty.

If you have a special blanket

or heirloom item,

we can absolutely incorporate it!

How Do We Schedule If We Don’t Know Baby’s Arrival Date?

We’ll tentatively book your session

for 7–15 days after your due date.

If baby arrives earlier or later than expected,

we’ll adjust accordingly.

For scheduled C-sections,

I recommend booking toward

the end of the two-week mark

to allow time for recovery.

What’s the Best Age for a Newborn Session?

The sweet spot for newborn sessions

is within the first two weeks,

while babies are still sleepy and curled up.

That said, since these sessions focus

on natural moments rather

than posed shots,

there’s flexibility

— so don’t stress if you feel like you missed the “ideal” window!

What Should We Wear?

Keep it simple and timeless.

Soft neutrals, pastels,

and muted tones work best,

as they keep the focus on your baby.

Avoid loud patterns, bold colors,

or anything with logos.

It’s also helpful to consider the

color scheme of your home

so your outfits complement the space.

Where Will the Photos Be Taken?

I typically shoot in the

nursery,

living room,

master bedroom,

or any cozy corners of your home

— think

bay windows,

fireplaces,

or even the

front porch swing.

If you don’t have a nursery,

no worries!

We can create beautiful images

in any space that feels comfortable.

What If My Home Isn’t “Pinterest-Worthy”?

Please don’t stress about this!

These sessions are about love and connection,

not home décor.

I’ll use the best available light

and work around any clutter.

Trust me

— your baby’s snuggles

will be the only thing

you’ll notice in these images.

What Can I Expect During the Session?

When I arrive,

I’ll take a quick look around

to find the best lighting.

We typically start with

family photos,

then sibling shots,

followed by parent solos,

and finally,

baby-focused images.

There’s plenty of time for diaper changes,

feedings,

and breaks

— everything unfolds naturally.

What If My Baby is Fussy?

Babies cry

— it’s totally normal!

I give you all the time you need to

soothe,

feed,

and settle your little one.

Before your session,

I’ll share tips on

how to prepare

so we’re set up for success.

What If My Older Kids Don’t Cooperate?

Adjusting to a new sibling can be a big change,

and little ones may need breaks

— at home,

we have the flexibility

to let them come and go as they please.

I also recommend

setting expectations beforehand

and keeping things light

and pressure-free.

And if all else fails?

A little screen time (strategically out of frame) can work wonders!

Can Grandparents Join In?

Absolutely!

If grandparents are in town,

I always encourage them

to jump in for a few shots.

These moments are priceless!

Can We Include Our Pets?

Yes!

I’m a huge animal lover,

and if your pet is comfortable,

I’d love to capture a few moments

with them and your baby.

Can We Take Photos Outdoors?

Indoor sessions are usually scheduled at a time when outdoor lighting is harsh,

but if you’d love a few backyard shots,

we can work around it.

If you prefer a primarily outdoor session,

we’ll adjust the timing accordingly.
