Setting Your Family Up for a Smooth & Fun Photo Session

Kids will be kids—there’s no avoiding that!

But with a little preparation, you can help set them up

for a stress-free, enjoyable session.

Well Rested & Well Fed

No one is at their best when they’re

tired and hangry—kids included!

Making sure your little ones are well-rested

and have full bellies before your session

is one of the best ways to set the tone for a happy,

cooperative experience.

Comfortable, Well-Fitted Clothing

Uncomfortable outfits = cranky kids.

Clothes that are too tight or shoes that slip off

can quickly lead to frustration

—and we all know how that can go!

Choose outfits that are soft, breathable,

and fit well so your child feels

comfortable moving around.

Also, consider the weather

and dress accordingly.

It never hurts to have a backup outfit

in case of spills, accidents,

or unexpected weather shifts!

Talk About Me Like a Friend

Kids are naturally cautious around new people,

and the last thing we want is for

them to feel shy or uneasy.

Before your session, introduce me as a friend

—not just a photographer.

Talking about how much fun

we’ll have together

makes a big difference

in helping them feel comfortable

when we meet!

Set Clear Expectations

Kids do best

when they

know what to expect.

Before your session,

let them know

we’ll take lots of different photos

—some with the whole family,

some with just Mom,

some with siblings,

and a few solo shots too.

Since they’re used

to quick phone snaps,

kids often think one photo is all it takes.

Giving them a little heads-up

makes the process smoother

(and way more fun)!

Arrive Early

I totally get that life is busy,

but if you can, arrive a little early

to give your kids time to settle in.

This is especially helpful for

kids who are shy or slow to warm up

—letting them explore the space

for a few minutes before we start

can work wonders for their confidence

and comfort level!

Let Them Be Themselves

No need to practice stiff poses

or forced smiles.

The best photos come from

kids being their authentic,

playful selves.

The belly laughs, the goofy faces,

the little moments of curiosity

—that’s where the magic is.

And don’t worry

—I actually want them

to be a little mischievous!

Don’t Force It

The quickest way to shut a kid down?

Forcing them to participate.

Instead, I love to give them choices

throughout the session

so they feel like

they are part of the experience.

For example:

"Do you want to sit on this blanket

or stand by that tree?"

It’s a simple shift,

but it empowers them

and makes them

way more likely to engage!

Take Breaks When Needed

Sometimes, kids just need a breather

—and that’s totally okay.

A quick snack (something non-messy!)

or a sip of water

can help reset their energy

and keep the session

feeling light and fun.

Relax & Enjoy the Moment

This one’s for you, parents—especially you, Mom!

I know you want everything to go perfectly,

but trust me,

the best moments happen

when you’re relaxed and present.

Your kids mirror your energy

—so the more fun you’re having,

the more fun they’ll have.

I promise, we’ll capture the beautiful,

natural moments you’re hoping for.
