Choosing the Best Time for Your Maternity Session

First off—congratulations!

This is such an exciting chapter in your life,

and capturing this journey

is something you’ll cherish forever.

One of the most common questions

I get as a maternity photographer is:

"When is the best time to take maternity photos?"

Since every pregnancy is unique,

the answer varies from person to person.

But here are some general guidelines

to help you determine

the best timeframe

for you and your growing bump!

At the end of the day,

listening to your body

and how it’s changing

is the most important factor

when planning your maternity session.

What Trimester Is Best for Maternity Photos?

For most expecting moms, the best time

to schedule your maternity session

is during the third trimester,

typically between 27–34 weeks

(around months 7 and 8).

This timeframe is ideal because:

✔️ Your belly has a beautifully defined, round shape.

✔️ You’re still relatively comfortable moving around.

✔️ You have enough energy to enjoy your session.

That being said,

timing can vary depending on your pregnancy:

First-time moms

often show a little later,

so scheduling around 30–34 weeks works well.

Experienced moms

typically show sooner,

so a session around 27–30 weeks might be best.

Expecting multiples?

You’ll likely want to book earlier

—around 24–28 weeks

—since your belly will grow more quickly

and delivery may happen sooner.

Is 35+ Weeks Too Late for Maternity Photos?

Not at all!

If you’re past 35 weeks and

wondering if it’s too late, don’t stress

it’s always better

to capture this special moment

than to skip it altogether.

That said, if you’re feeling uncomfortable

or have difficulty getting around, consider:

✔️ Choosing a location that’s easy to access (fewer hills, shorter walks).

✔️ Opting for an in-home lifestyle session for a cozy, intimate feel.

The key is making sure you feel relaxed, comfortable, and beautiful.

What If I Have a High-Risk Pregnancy?

If you have a high-risk pregnancy

or any concerns about overexertion,

you may want to schedule your session earlier

—around 24–28 weeks

—while you’re still feeling your best.

Most importantly, listen to your body.

When Should I Book My Maternity Photographer?

Maternity photographers book up quickly

—especially during busy seasons like fall!

To make sure you secure a session

with your photographer,

I recommend booking right after

your 12–16 week appointment.
